SKIN DEEP
Format: SONY HD-EXCAM3
Director: Maria Hayes
Duration: 5 mins
Info: The cameraman had a good eye and we kept the frames as still as possible to allow the movement of the sea and the dance to be the focus. Where we did pan in a shot it was minimal and slow.
Although we veered from the shooting schedule to allow for the cold weather conditions, I ticked off the scenes as we did them to keep track of where we were and this meant we worked efficiently. This became increasingly urgent as we raced against the encroaching tide. Sometimes we had to abandon shooting, pick up the equipment and run back for dry land.

THE MONKEY KING
Monkey King Causes Havoc in the Heavenly Palace.
Cai and Xi create a contemporary interpretation of one of the great Chinese classics in their version of Monkey King as a short film. With monkey faces they symbolically move amidst the objects in the museum, using it as a metaphor for the Heavenly Palace. Monkey King is a renowned classical Chinese novel written some four hundred years ago. Based on a true story of a famous Chinese monk Xuan Zang the legendary rebellious character is invited by the Jade Emperor to the Heavenly Palace where he creates havoc. He eventually attains enlightenment, after being taught discipline and suffering by the Tang priest, who leads him to retrieve the Buddhist scripts from the West (India) to take back to China. The story is mingled with fables, legends, superstitions, monster stories as well as Daoist and Buddhist beliefs. The work also acts as a metaphor for the artists own journey to the West.
